World Cup 2022

I think I’d rather have played Netherlands next and then the winner of Poland v Australia in the quarters, than Senegal and then the winner of France v Argentina… ultimately though, to win the whole thing almost certainly means beating both France and Brazil :face_holding_back_tears:

If we want to win the cup it is irrelevant whom we play.
The truth is that England never back themselves. We have some good players but a manager who never learns by his mistakes.

This is my 6th World Cup and I can’t complain about atmosphere or quality of the matches I’ve been to so far (I go to at least one match a day).

And with alcohol restrictions, you end up in a situation where fans have been focusing on what matters most: football and supporting their teams. I’ve witnessed this many times in person over the past two weeks.

Fantastic, @NW3Andre!

I’ll be honest that I had no interest in attending a World Cup in Qatar. But having watched it from home I can’t help wishing I was out there enjoying the football and the mingling of hundreds of thousands ordinary people from different corners of the world. I think the opportunity to meet folk from so many different nationalities in this way is totally unique to football world cups and is one of the things I’ve enjoyed almost as much as the football itself.

I’m already making tentative plans for the 2026 WC, and of course Germany in 2024 which should be brilliant.

Enjoy the rest of your trip!

Wow. Another amazing evening……the prospect of both japan and costa rica going through which was quite real 30 mins ago was astounding and even just japan going through is amazing.

It is however farcical that we can’t yet see the goal line camera for japan’s goal…

Incredible drama! Normally there are a string of dead rubbers in these final group games but each group has had excitement to the end in this WC.

Brilliant entertainment today: the second half of the Croatia-Belgium game earlier was also compelling.

Well done Japan!

Great to see Japan win tonight - there’s a lot of good football in Japan & Korea, and good to see a team from outside Europe / S.America getting big results.

Totally agree.

Good to see African teams do well too. Morocco did amazingly to finish top of a group with the countries who finished 2nd and 3rd last time.

The Germans got eliminated again in the first round. I can’t hide my slight happiness.

Don’t worry there will be plenty of opportunities for England to self-destruct.

Fantastic to see S.Korea go through now too; Seoul will be fun tonight :~}

If I were English I’d be optimistic. No-one else is looking invincible at the minute. With a bit of form and a good dose of luck, England could go very deep in this tournament.

Indeed, in fact if Brazil don’t score (and we’re 88 mins in now), I think we go through with the best stats from the group stages.

While this obviously doesn’t mean we are the best team in the competition, nobody will fancy playing us.

I still think France and Brazil are the best teams when they play their strongest sides.

I don’t care who wins. But it is good to see teams qualifying who are not on FIFA’s list of usual suspects

A very entertaining tournament so far. Fingers crossed this remains for the knockout stages. Uruguay - karma.

I’ve liked Uruguay in recent tournaments. Yes, they’ve been masters of the dark arts but I actually don’t mind that if it’s accompanied by attacking flair.

Unfortunately they now seem to have ramped up the gamesmanship and abandoned the entertaining football, so I was also delighted to see them eliminated yesterday.

I actually also quite like them and cannot really blame Suarez for what he has done in the 2014 game. The way they piled on the referees after the game is disgraceful.

They need to start banning teams from tournaments when their players behave that way.
