Wine Champions 2020

Hard to tell on the internet, I concede, but I don’t think tongue-in-cheek grapism counts as unpleasant elitism.

@Nfrost00, time to deploy the ROFL/Wink/Dripping_in_sarcasm emoji :kissing_heart:

Emojis have never been my friend

Regardless, the Champions 2020 Sauvignon Blanc case appears to have disappeared from the website.

What happened?

  • @cgoldin bought the lot
  • TWS suffered a case of unpleasant elitism and decided Marlborough Sauvignon isn’t fit to grace the Champions 2020 rostrum
  • Someone did a listing boo boo

I think we need to start using the sarcasm switch on here:

I think we should have option 4: @Nfrost00 bought the lot. Who knows why???

He’s a masochist

Actually I did eat all the ‘Coddington’ pies - thought it was SB

I can admit that my aversion is a result of over indulgence during student days :kissing_heart:

Hold fast there - you’re not alone! Good examples are perfectly delicious!
We don’t want pistols at dawn now, do we?

Can some of us just incorporate it in our name, like a badge?

You’ll have to petition @kelly to make you that one! You can amend your name in your profile, but it will only appear if people hover mouse / click on your name.

Excellent idea. It would avoid a lot of confusion.

My comment started it, sorry.
Jokey yes, but in fact I can’t stand the stuff. Never have.
I will continue to let me people on a wine forum what I think about wine.
Surely that’s that’s the point of a wine forum?
I’m not having a go at anyone else’s taste, just stating my own.

No need to apologise, I don’t think anyone was truly offended.

Fair enough, it just seemed a bit repetitive is all.

True, but its not particularly interesting or helpful to anyone if you’re simply wading into a conversation to immediately dismiss an entire category. Fair enough if you want to comment on a bottle which isn’t very good (and this is really interesting and helpful feedback for everyone) but no one benefits from ‘Chardonnays are all rubbish, lol’ type comments.

It would be more interesting, if you were so inclined, to start a topic to discuss why you dislike SBs and ask if there are any examples that people could suggest which might persuade you. I personally find it hard to understand how any professed wine enthusiast could , or would even want to, simply dismiss an entire category of wine.

It’s normal. SB (esp NZ SB) is often a showy wine that shows itself best without food, and this kind of wine, naturally, tends to impress in an artificial scenario like a tasting.

Wines that impress in tastings are, in my experience, rarely the ones i want to drink with food, slowly, discovering new things about. The ones that win in tastings often don’t pass the one glass test.

Just as in politics, i think it’s good to have a healthy disrespect for medals and honours

PS I do like some Sauvignon myself - much more than oaky Chardonnay  - but tend to prefer Loire or NE Italy.

Casting my mind back over a couple of years in this community I think I’ve seen negativity expressed, to various degrees, about:
(NZ) SB
Cabernet Sauvignon
Chardonnay
Riesling
Rioja (Tempranillo?)
Pinot Noir.
Possibly some other less common grapes have had their critics too.
But never, that I can remember, about Merlot, Viognier, Malbec, Zinfandel. Surely, with such common grape varieties, somebody must dislike them too?
