Submitted an order I’d been considering for a family pig-feast (thanks Basco) in July, plus a couple of bargainous bottles of rosé I know will get glugged while we’re all gathered in Norfolk for a week; amongst other things.

Also these arrived today from Ultravino. No idea about the producer, but curious to find out. Sharing with a friend.

One of my brothers is back from Hong Kong with his family for the first time in 3 or maybe 4 years so my mum and dad have gone a bit giddy and booked a house that can accommodate all 16 of us humans and quite a few hounds. I think it’s near Downham Market.

I’ve offered to plan and cook most of the meals and arrange for something appropriate to drink, so just getting a head start on things. It does mean leaving kilos of prime Iberico pork cuts and no doubt multiple boxes of wine in the clutches of my dad (they have chest freezer and I have no space for more wine), so I just hope he doesn’t run out of food and drink before July!

I don’t know if mine qualifies as a ‘basket’ this month - more of a satchel made up of different wines from different places. Particularly looking forward to the Louis Sipp Auxerrois (thanks to @CCouzens for the tip), Rolly-Gassmann’s Sylvaner and Samsara Priorat from TWS

Also bought the new vintage of the delightful Paul Giglinger’s Crémant d’Alsace Brut Prestige and the excellent Chénas Quartz from Dominique Piron (the 2016 was fab).

Non WS wines I’m looking forward to are a Shiraz/Mataro blend from Australian ‘Adelina’ winery:

Have only ever tasted one wine from them - an Arneis, which we loved - so took a punt on this one with some birthday vouchers. @winechief, I’m still keeping an eye for their Cab Franc…

Also, following a glowing review in this month’s Decanter, got a Riesling from the Chaffey Bros, from ASDA (link not working for some reason - so took a screen shot):

This will be tres interesting! Given 95 points by the Decanter panel, but ASDA punters are not so convinced…

Petrol notes…? In Riesling? surely not

You’re right, Lawrence, I do enjoy German wines, but I’m no kind of expert.

Many of the German wines I buy would be described by some as sweet, but that’s a matter of preference and possibly perception. The better wines will have a balancing acidity.

There are several rieslings around the £10 mark on the list. The Society’s Saar might be a good place to start.

I can’t really comment on many of the dry wines but I have a bottle of this looking at me from the rack. I don’t think it will survive the weekend.

Zilliken make some excellent wines but I haven’t had this before.

You and I share a similar taste in white wine - regretfully expensive - I can confirm the Pieropan, Pinot Gris & Exhibition Hermitage are superb. The Hermitage might need a little longer - but is brilliant already. The other bottles…never tried but I feel I ought to.

Thanks! I’ve tried previous vintages of the Exhibition Hermitage Blanc, but not the 2015 or 2017 (one of each in this delivery). Any thoughts on which to drink first?

And for the others, I know the Boxler isn’t cheap but it elevates Pinot Gris to a totally different category. I’m keeping some back to see how these mature as think they could be very good at 12-15 years. Also Jancis did a tasting on Pieropan and said how well that matures at 10 years+ if you like the sherry-ish kind of flavours that develop (I do…)

The other wine I would really recommend is the Chante Alouette. I bought this EP and it has developed into a really lovely food wine, and to my mind better than other better known mainstream rhone whites I’ve tried in the past few years (Clos des Papes, Vieux Telegraph, Beaucastel).

I have much faith in the Chaffey Bros one, though. This may well be snobbish of me - but I rarely take on board supermarket punters’ reviews. But who knows? The Decanter panel may have got it completely wrong…!

I’m with you on this, I only really read them for fun! I’ll def try the Chaffey Bros if I happen to find any in the local Asda, but I’m a sucker for Clare Valley riesling, and at £7.50/bottle the Aldi one seemed like the proverbial no-brainer.

They arrived earlier today, so no doubt will be able to report back very soon!
