What is in your basket [January and February 2022]

Continuing the discussion from What’s in your basket: November & December 2021:

Did not last long without buying any wine in the New Year. Pulled the trigger on some 2008 Barolo Baudana Baudana I have been eyeing for a long time. Hope to get a bottle delivered as soon as delivered to my reserves. Here is to happy wine buying in 2022. Cheers.

Interesting that a search on ‘Barolo’ on the WS site returns one Rosso Veneto (two vintages), one Calabria Rosso and one Spanish Rosado. That’s it.

I always search ‘Piedmont’. Seems to do the trick. Admittedly, you get a few extra hits, but generally it’s all there.

Double headed issue with the poor search function and (having searched on both Nebbiolo and Piemonte) there being no Barolo in stock.

I’m sure @szaki1974 got it from elsewhere

Expecting delivery of 2 cases of small wonders Christmas whites tomorrow with a degree of trepidation. Partly because it’s the first time I’ve knowingly accepted delivery by courier, about which I have mixed feelings; partly because it shows twice under “my orders” and one of these says “allow 2 working days for delivery”. Really? 2 days from when? Should I plan for the possibility of spending 2 days at home waiting?

Acceptance of a non TWS courier - I felt a bit cornered on this. My last delivery, by TWS van, was short of some of what I wanted because it had run out. Knowing the Christmas whites cases were in short supply I was reluctant to wait for a TWS van in case I then didn’t get the wines as ordered. I hope I do tomorrow or I’ll be very upset.

I’ve had no trouble with courier …… guess jinxed now ….

Courier arrived about 30 minutes early, which I think is fair enough.

The wine - well, 12 bottles arrived and 10 were as expected, 2 not. I don’t think that has much to do with the courier.

Now with Katie’s passing I thought I should up the quantity of halves in my order. The non alcoholic Fizz is a present to kind friends who looked after me recently. Would be nice to see a few more halves available to W/S members in the future!

Had a case delivered today of the above off the back of my recent tasting of the 2012. Missed originally via TWS EP last year.

No new wine until the Rhone EP? Of course that worked. Two wines I probably should have posted about in this weeks midweek drinking thread sampled at The Black Book in Soho now on their way to me

A Georgian red, which is much more like something from Friuli. A bit natural on the nose but then so much acid and crunch red fruit it almost feels fizzy.

and a classic young timorasso with citrus, honey, nuts and a lovely waxy finish.

I’ve been tempted by Wine Direct’s latest 25% off bin-ends offer (link on Current Wine Offers thread).

What better way to mitigate the month of purgatory by buying in some nice bottles for later…

Here’s my mixed case…

Citran is lovely. Although I normally pick it up from a French supermarket - so the UK prices are a bit of a shock!

Yes I agree £23 seemed a bit steep but it had a good Jancis Robinson review so I thought I would give it a go

Second order of the day. Partially, that’s dry jan for you, but I haven’t seen San Leonardo for under £50 for a while. It is very lovely, so will be put aside for special occasions

Clos du Caillou
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Safres 2015
Bottle (0.75 l)

Quantity 1 bottle Price £31.65
San Leonardo
San Leonardo 2015
Bottle (0.75 l)

Quantity 2 bottles Price £99.90
Subtotal (3 bottles): £131.55

Coupon discount: £13.16
Order Total: £118.39

Edit: it was a vivino order after price checking the wine direct offer @PHarvey flagged which was also very tempting (lots of good US and OZ wines there) I think I cleared out the stock of San Leonardo at Vivino but the Clos du Caillou remains

I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on the Marcarini Langhe Nebbiolo if you’re opening a bottle soon. I’ve been eying some up for a time, as I like Marcarini’s style, and Barolo prices seem only to be heading in one direction!

@Tannatastic i buy it every year and personally it’s my favourite Langhe.
It feels more well defined than other producers in general and it’s amazing value.
This case was an EP purchase that arrived in December I think.
