Welcome to the weekend!
But first, a wine from Wednesday, which was enjoyed with liver and onions…
Saumur ‘Tuffeau’ Cabernet Franc 2020
Not a wine to overthink - but certainly one that would be easy to over-drink. On both nose and palate it exhibited an appetising freshness - though it had some weight - and good Loire Cab Franc typicity. Ripe red fruit (raspberries, cherries, strawberries), a twist of cedar woodiness, some clove spice and violet perfume made this quaffable indeed. Finish was savoury, lifted by bright acidity - in short, excellent value for money coming at £6.99 in Lidl last summer.
A little loftier drinking today with a wine that needs little introduction here:
Rapsani Terra Petra, Thymiopoulos 2019
This wine certainly ticks the 3 C’s - it’s classy, complex and cerebral. It takes time to unveil itself, but patience (not a virtue here usually!) really pays off. It spent a couple hours in the decanter - there was a bit of sediment- and the colour is still youthful medium ruby. First glass was sniffed for ages… there were blackcurrants and plums, but also beetroot, tomato paste and oregano/marjoram and a dank forest floor. Lovely stuff!
It unfolds slowly on the palate too, with a beguiling combination of fruit, herbs and umami notes, plus some spice. It’s a delicate song of the Med, with a medium body and lively acidity - though the tannins are still a little rasping and need to meld into the whole. But my, what a fantastic wine for the money!
It will accompany a Corsican veal stew, so both can conjure up the Med in their own way, I hope.
