Yeah I quite agree on how ranging it really opens one’s eyes on what can be the difference. Here was a great example in that regard Domaine Perdiguier Vertical case
I didn’t bite on this one (which is rare for me). Just too much wine that needs drinking now!
Inspired by a fairly recent German collaboration (Klaus Peter Keller & Howard Ripley), I’d love to see a ‘Rising Stars of xxx’ case, presenting a selection of wines made by relatively unknown winemakers.
I would imagine that the TWS buyers have sufficient relationships with established winemakers (like KPK) across the major wine-buying regions who would be able to come up with a pretty sweet shortlist.
I would also hope that given the relative anonymity of the winemakers, the value for members purchasing the case would be excellent too. Any big successes could then be considered for a more regular purchasing arrangement. Win win?
How about a ‘Member’ curated case every quarter? @Inbar and @Kidman have already made suggestions? We could get their suggestions along with their reasons and their tasting notes. Perhaps if it could include 4 red, 4 red and 4 others (fizz, rose, sherry) and then those of us who like to pick can choose 6 bottles from the set (e.g. red plus sherry)
Yes, sounds like a brilliant idea to me - this way there’s more chances to appeal to different tastes and yet it’s fully created by members and to members
I have many years experience of “curating” cases of wine, and might be prepared to make them public, especially if I get a £1 commission on each case sold.
The Curiosity Shop was the first TWSTaste that I attended on the community just after I joined. It was a great introduction to outside my comfort zone.
The conversation that started this thread (which was fun, as this thread has semi-resurrected) about what our mixed cases would be was started by the idea of getting “wine people” and celebs to do their favourite mixed cases. A sort of extension to the “desert island wines” concept really.
One of the society’s main strengths is its fantastic buying team. Curated cases, with wines selected by our buyers, are always a good idea.
Take the example of Roberson, who was quick to release a mixed case to celebrate their (single) Decanter award.
“In celebration of Roberson Wine’s win, we are offering The Ultimate California Case (6x75cl) – a case to give you a taste of just how good this region can be – and how fascinatingly varied. We hope you take the same pleasure from it that we took in meeting and tasting these wines with our incredible producers – who really should take all the credit for this award.”
The society won many awards at the same competition, and we are missing an opportunity here, to release mixed cases selected by the buyers of the respective categories / regions.
