Is anyone familiar with the Alsace producer Pierre Schueller Et Fils, by any chance?
I’ve noticed some of their 2018 Grand Cru Eichberg Riesling available at what seems a pretty good price on the face of it for a GC [£75 / 6 IB].

I haven’t tried their wines, and they don’t seem to have any web presence. Eichberg is generally fuller and smokier than the neighbouring Pfersigberg - I tend to think more of gewurz, but there is some very good riesling grown there too. Domaine Gérard Schueller, also in Husseren, is one of the oldest makers of natural wine in Alsace, but I’d guess that the surname is the only link.
Thank Robert - appreciated. There is, as you say, very little in the way of web presence at all.
I’ve got so many wines on my utterly unrealistic wish list just now that this is probably an easy one to pass on by.
I jumped on two Meyer Fonne GCs just recently in the De Burgh 20% off everything sale - a 2019 Wineck-Schlossberg, and a 2018 Kaefferkopf - so with both of those to look forwards to, I shall get back to stockpiling my Assyrtikos before their prices get any more stratospheric!
Not those vintages, but we tried and bought both of those Meyer-Fonnés a couple of years ago at the domaine - I think you will enjoy them Kaefferkopf is the fuller bodied of the two.
Interesting wine just popped up.

Well that’s a bit rubbish, tried to add to basket but unable to do so as apparently its limited to 12 bottles per member. Firstly it doesn’t state that in the listing, but moreover my basket is empty. I did buy some (maybe 12 bottles) before…3 years ago! Wonder if Member Services can help, seems a bit silly that buying my ‘allocation’ 3 years ago prevents me from buying any now, particularly when this is a ‘new wine’…
But yes, its a lovely wine if you like fruity, spicy, smokey riesling.
Hello! Just to clarify, we have just removed this limit so hopefully this will help. Thank you.
They have released aged Pegasus before. I bought a case a few years back. Nice wines. Plenty of that petroleum nose that Riesling wines of quality develop.
@NW3Andre @Matthew-8EAE4 how sweet is it? I’ve got a bottle coming - so will find out for myself - but might add another for a new year dinner for 6. But anything too sweet can scare the horses.
It’s not a dry wine for sure, but its sweetness level is on the lighter side, great with smoked fish. It’s more an suggestion of sweetness.
On the topic of sweet-on-the-lighter-side, this was lovely a couple of weeks ago:
Zilliken Saarburger Rausch Forstmeister Geltz Riesling Spätlese 2009. With salmon teriyaki. Enjoyed it even more than a previous bottle earlier this year. Sweet, but with a lovely gentle bitterness as well as freshness.
But I wasn’t convinced by this:
Tyrell, Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg Riesling Spätlese Trocken Alte Reben, 2015. Must be well placed in the ‘most unpronounceable wine name’ leaderboard. Never had a Spätlese Trocken before but I guess it does what you’d expect - opulent, tropical aromas and attack, but with a long, bone-dry finish. It didn’t quite hang together for me.
I agree with @NW3Andre that the sweetness level isn’t too high, and it’s a wine that can definitely take some age.
I’ve been leaving a few 2016s to sleep for a few more years, so was happy to pick up a couple of bottles of the 2009, a vintage I’m yet to try. Thanks to @Matthew-8EAE4 for the heads-up.
Pegasus Bay’s Bel Canto Dry Riesling is also an interesting wine, worth a try. Majestic currently has the 2020 on offer around £20 (mix 6 price) and you don’t often find it much below £25. I haven’t yet tried the 2020, but do have one. Tempted to buy more from Majestic at this price, but Mrs Smith blows hot and cold about Riesling, and we’re currently in a cold spell . Do be aware that the Bel Canto comes in at around 15% ABV (think the 2020 is 15.5%), but from my previous experience wears it lightly.
