Portuguese Conquerors

There are many topics specific to countries and regions (Rhone rangers, etc) but I couldn’t find any about Portugal.
I know there were some of us wondering what happen to the range of wines on offer.
I can see today that quite a few additions were made to the website.

I’m particularly happy to see this one. Excellent producer and although it’s their entry level red it really is VFM

Good to see this thread. I’m hoping the small number of recent additions to the list will preface something more extensive. The list is pretty underwhelming at the moment, though I’m sure I read that WS recognise this and are looking to rectify it. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for starting this @Rafa, great to see several new editions. What’s your opinion on Madeira coming into the fold? Should we see this here too?

I really enjoyed Bin 007 and would like to see another Encruzado or two added to the list. I drank my only bottle over 6 days and really enjoyed the evolution over that time.

Finally this looks like find for the summer, anyone tried it?

Yes it’s very good, but doesn’t keep. I bought 6 bottles from Portugal Vineyards I think, it was €2.50 a bottle. By the time I got to the last bottle the fizz had gone. I’m sure @Leah likes this also.

I saw a Portuguese wine in the Summer Edit that caught my eye and made it into my June order. It has been a while since I last seen a Soalheiro wine listed. My memory of them is very good and they got a favourable shout out in the recent AMA (prompted by my question).

@Brocklehurstj we definitely should in my opinion. It would be great to see TWS source a really old Madeira for the list.
I had the hortas sparkling quite a few times and it’s a cracker. Simple and refreshing but as @japcraw said it should be drunk within 6 months
Actually it’s more of a fizzy white than a sparkling.

As has already been said this wine looses its fizz after a while but also if you chill it too much . It’s a light frizzante style. I second the wines from Saolheiro , my favourite is the “Granite” TWS doesn’t seem to stock it but their wines are good across the board.

Worth mentioning as well one of the icons of Portugal.

Absolutely astonishing! Is the decimal point in the wrong place?

Well, you made me laugh as a reaction, but I think it’s fallacious to question whether Portugal are able to produce a still wine that sells at this price.

Certainly not cheap but I had the opportunity to taste previous vintages and it’s a great experience. Needs at least 10 years from the vintage to start drinking. Most vintages get highly praised and big scores hence the price

You think it should be £750? That would put it even beyond Barca Velha territory!

Not from TWS, but I recently purchased a bottle of this Baga from Filipa Pato to try:

Filipa Pato Dinamica Baga 2019 - Butlers Wine Cellar (butlers-winecellar.co.uk)

Having really enjoyed her (2017) Nossa Calcário - I am curious to see how they compare. Hoping the Society will re-stock the new vintage of Niepoort’s Lagar de Baixo Baga too - we loved it.

Along with Luis Pato she is one of the leading lights in the Bairrada

A chip off the old block, for sure!

2 bottles of the same wine have been delivered today (amongst others) from Portugal Direct for a rather GV EUR 9.51 each, had a voucher code which made delivery free, am expecting a duty/VAT bill at some time. Had a few Fllipa Pato whites before from the society which were good but the red was a wine of the week on Jancis R’s website a few weeks ago and had a rather mouthwatering write up. Do post a note

Brand new on the list and a very nice addition.
I do enjoy a decent aged moscatel

It’s perfectly nice. I had some last night and enjoyed it - even though it discusses ‘Allo Allo’ on the side of the label, of all things. Which is badly (Google-)translated suggesting that it’s set in a ‘Coffee’ in Occupied France. Sureallistic and thoroughly enjoyable thing to find on the label blurb.

Low alcohol and very nice. Not as wonderful as the Alvarino I had a few years ago - I’ve gone on about that - TWS please get it back!
