Ahaaaa, these are based just south of Stonehaven on the A90 to Aberdoooom. Never called in to purchase anything … funnily enough.
Edit, Im wrong , Im thinking of another winery, this must be from the Holy Island
Do it, you know you want to! Can’t be any more offensive than my Sainburys primitivo from the weekend - that probably could have benefited from some added beer, mead and rum.
On the other hand you might be saving it for a special occasion?
It seemed to spawn in our house on Boxing Day morning, but that may only be because the previous day was so hazy…
Go for it! You’ve nothing to lose but your chains!!
Sorry, wrong battle (bottle?) cry!
At the appropriate moment (maybe after a couple of bottles), put the bottle on something that can turn, go up close to the base, spin and watch the golden birds go flying and feel the vibe of Holy Island.
Don’t have much weird wine in the house so going for probably the weirdest bottle I have called Pink Tapon, 2011 from St Emillion. Its 15.75% alcohol and supposedly a cross between a rose and a red wine or as the bottle says vin rosé ou rouge léger, and that its best serve cold. Its classified as a Clairet on vivino but not sure I would call it that its just a weird very strong rose for those who love big red wines but need something chilled for a summers nights.
As long as it’s not a Pink Tampon…
I’ll get my (petti)coat…
Looking forward to this tasting on Thursday - I think quite a few on our wine rack can be described as ‘weird’. Very interesting seeing which bottles you’ll all be opening.
Moldova de Lux, semi sweet red sparkling wine 2006
We bought this some years ago while at a conference in Moldova. We visited the Milestii Mici winery („Moldova de Lux” red semi dry )and found that this sparkling red went well with the snacks on offer after the wine tour and tasting.
Definitely counts as “wierd” in our book!
I have a cherished bottle of Ukrainian Kagor
Usually drunk at Orthodox Pravislavl Pasqua = Easter (I think) As good as many ports, it’s a raisinous intense beast of a brew
Note the recently arrived Blind Spot Chardonnay in the background
Right - here is my considered offering for tomorrow.
It’s a NV Vila Istenič (Slovenia)
According to their website, it is - “a very special sparkling wine. Served over ice, it is a most prestigious summer refreshment”. We’ll see about that, especially as it recommends serving at 0C. Probably not as weird as @sm42’s Moldovan sparkler, but I bet he didn’t pay 95p for it.
My weirdness would be complete if Dominic Cummings were to turn up, but he still hasn’t responded to my invitation.
Looks like it departed almost as recently!
The people have spoken, orange wine for tomorrow it is!
Nikoloz Antadze, Rkatsiteli, Kakheti 2018. Traditional method / low intervention, fermented in qveri, indigenous grape to Georgia etc etc.
Bar stools have arrived today as well, so we get to try a new venue for the tasting (approx 2m from the previous venue)
Looking forward to this!
I’ll be bringing a contrarian Argentine. No, not my father-in-law (badum), but PolOpuesto Qué Grande SOS! Vino Criollo 2017.
This hipster turned up in my flat on World Malbec Day as if to say ‘Oh, Mendoza? I preferred its earlier stuff, maan’. It comes from what might be the only vineyard in the Uco Valley still planted to the old Criolla grapes that were all but grubbed up in favour of Malbec/Cab/etc. It’s a field blend of mostly Criolla Grande with white and pink Muscat, Criolla Chica (AKA País), Cereza and a smidge of Bonarda and Tempranillo. It was pretty weird but rather good (albeit not for everyone), and it’s nice to have an excuse to try it again!
Mud House NZ : Short on offbeat or exciting weird, but joined vicariously last week without an offering which wasn’t much fun. Prompted by last week’s Ian Botham thought would get out Miraval rose because I think it’s weird when celebrities decide to take up making wine. Brad and Angelinia trusted this over to Perrin so at least they probably weren’t all over the vats themselves. With rose and Miraval on my mind whilst out for a grocery shop noticed this Mudhouse sic ‘Sauvignon Blanc Rose’. Bit weird in my book. Have had a Sancerre Rose a while back and realise this is a NZ version but thought the title was enough to give me some sort of foot in the door for tomorrow. And anyway it’s all good fun.
I thought Sancerre Rose was Pinot Noir based? I’m fascinated by the concept Sauvignon Blanc rose, as I was under the impression it’s a very pale/light skinned grape.
It is !
The Mudhouse is a blended wine as far as im aware.

Oh yeah, you’re probably right. I shall have to look it up before tomorrow. Sancerre was on my mind because of sauvignon blanc in Loire - this offering’s a sauvignon blanc with pinot noir added…

Thanks Leah - spot as ever! Oh well, see what tomorrow brings - at least it’s rose weather!
