Does anyone have any recommendations of wines on the current list that show a menthol / mint note?
a search for menthol gives 1 hit - Savage ‘Follow the Line’, Western Cape 2017
Not as minty as Thelema’s “The Mint”, but it’s definitely there and good value imho.
There is a clone of Cabernet Sauvignon called The Reynella Clone which is famous for producing very minty wines. The mint flavour abates somewhat on ageing, but it may be useful to know.
It is believed to have been a Bordeaux clone that seems to have died out, possibly at the time of Phylloxera, on its home turf, but is still grown in Australia.
I don’t know which CS clone gives the minty wines from S. Africa, but it would be interesting to know.
The most minty note I ever tasted in a wine was a Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra, but it was served by friends at a dinner party - so I have no idea where they got it from. Not much of a help, sorry!
This one’s lovely:
The big brother of the Xinomavro Jeunes Vignes also has hints of mint, and a certain sappy herbal note to it.
Shhh…don’t tell everyone…
I don’t think it’s a well-kept secret around here
