So many of the wines people are having tonight sound fascinating. Any chance the Society might put together a mixed case of “Weird wines” someday? Fully appreciate that is an unrealistic logistical challenge during lock down!
We’ll give it (the Maury) a 7, may be one for the winter, and a fire, and Stilton & a grape or two.
Mrs CC:
DereszlaTokaji Furmint 2018: 8
Charles Smith Kung Fu Girl Riesling, Washington State, 2017: 8
Diamantakos Naoussa 2016: 7
Vinkara Okuzgozu 2016
Solid 8/10. It’s not mind blowing, but it’s well made and tastes lovely!
Prunelart 2013, Domaine Barreau
It is quite a challenging wine - a discovery no doubt…I think I’ll say 7, maybe 7.5
PolOpuesto Qué Grande SOS! Vino Criollo 2017 gets 8.5/10 from me tonight. Gluggable but so nuanced, and its all round individuality combined with its lovely backstory has captured my affections.
Agreed! Another 8 from me too
8/10 for the German swear words (Acolon/Dunkelfelder, Cab Mitos)… 'tis so much lovelier and tastier than expected. The girl just said there’s some ‘dark chocolate notes on the aftertaste’… Jancis, start worrying…!
Shame Aldi doesn’t stock this amymore…
Mateus Rose: a surprising 6/7
puklavec & friends cabernet sauvignon and merlot 2017. Produced in the Republic of Macedonia.
5/10
(Scores on Waitrose website range from 1/5 to 5/5)
Vinkara Okuzgozu 2015
Only a 6/10 for me. It’s nice enough but a bit lacking in structure for my tastes. I suspect it is also best drunk young and I’m almost at the end of the drinking window for mine.
So pleased! Such colour!!
2017 Villavino Raca, Devin (grape variety) from Nitra, Slovakia
A good 7.5/10 its lighter than we’d normally drink but is fresh and different.
I’m not going to score my brunello as it was an IMPOSTER for tonight’s purposes but my tasting notes probably give a good indication of what I’d have given it.
I hope their Furmint is better, as I got one in the rack…
February has historically been the time for weird(ish) offers - The Society’s Curiosity Shop, Dare To Discover, Off The Beaten Track have been the various names for these offers. I think the Sabar has featured in at least one of those, along with the Vinkara from Turkey, Greek stuff and weird Italian, French and Portuguese stuff.
I MUST take a look…thanks
Nikoloz Antadze, Rkatsiteli, Kakheti 2018
Oh! Some Gruyere on these little toasts with pumpkin seeds and dried apricots… the sweet/salt/apricot thing really likes the wine!
Can’t do marks out of 10 on this one. We’re enjoying the wine, but it’s a certain experience over the wine itself. The thrill of something more challenging in the glass and nice produce on the table, enjoyed with music by candlelight. (and barstools)
I do like the way the Aussies are combining weird and regular grapes. Lagrein & dolcetto, syrah & zweigelt and others …
