LIVE FROM 8PM: #TWSTaste Bring A Bottle: South Africa, Thursday 13th August, 8-9pm

Good afternoon/evening everyone!

Welcome to tonight’s LIVE virtual Bring A Bottle: South Africa tasting.

This week, our theme is South Africa - we’ll all be bringing different South African wine that we have at home, for a virtual taste-along.

Here’s how things will work:

  1. We will post a WIKI (editable list) of who’s tasting what tonight. Have a look and, if you’re not on there, please do add yourself! You can do that by clicking the ‘Edit’ button in the bottom right of the post.
  2. We’ll also post a poll to see who’s here - please let us know, and feel free to say hi and start chatting before we start.
  3. We’re all drinking different bottles, so it might be hard to keep track. Whenever you post tonight, please start your post with the name of the wine you’re drinking!
  4. To begin, we’ll invite you all to pour a glass, have a swirl and take in the aromas, and post your thoughts and first impressions. Feel free to take your time and have a good swirl and sniff.
  5. We’ll then taste the wines together and ask you to share your own tasting note. Feel free to add any additional food matches and/or your thoughts on how well the wine is drinking now, and how much longer it might age. Anything goes, and there are no wrong answers!
  6. After this, we’ll possibly have time to ask for your mark out of 10, or final thoughts.

Please then feel free to continue chatting about the wines you’re drinking (we’ll likely be indulging in another glass anyway!)

Me too! I very nearly bought that several times but it just kept getting squeezed out of the basket, so you’ll just have to drink it for me :yum:

It slipped my mind there was a South Africa tasting tonight, but by coincidence I opened this last night for EP research purposes…

Half a bottle left, so will post a more detailed tasting note later. Needless to say, I was impressed with the first couple of glasses even though I just popped the cork and poured, so will be interesting to see what 24 hours of evolution has done to it.

Ataraxia Pinot Noir 2016 from the wines of Kevin Grant
Klein Constantia Riesling 2015, which I now see was in the quirky South African TWS Taste in February 2019.

Hi everyone! Really excited about this (I don’t drink enough South African wine and now seems a really good time to do so!) so we’ll be getting started shortly.

Old Vine Cinsault: lovely violet colour around the edges. Notes of raspberry, ripe strawberry, violets, touches of smoke and old wood. Lovely

Wandering Beeste Syrah 2013

Typical Syrah rubber, quite smoky, very dark, plenty of blackcurrant fruit

The Liberator Sangiovese 2003

A bit brown around the edge (as to be expected) but the nose is interesting! Smells very mature but there is a hint of fresh fruit to it still. Lots of dried cherry and cranberry on the nose, spicy note of clove and a hint of tea. And then an abundance of mushroomy, leathery goodness.
