Just had my first EP wine :)

#1

Hi all,

I have just taken delivery of some of the EP wines from my reserves, I bought a mixed case from the Rhone 2013 EP offer, all of them are now in the drink window so I decided to open one of them. I chose to open a bottle of Chateau Mont Redon Lirac - I notice that the Chateau also has a CNDP wine as well and the cork had CNDP on it. The Wine Society isn’t currently selling the wine but I can see that Virgin wines have it for sale at around £15 a bottle - not bad considering I paid around £8 for it.

The wine itself was delicious, dark fruits with a hint of spice and smoke, very enjoyable - I am glad I bought a case of 12 with 6 wines and 2 bottles each.

I will keep the other bottle until next year to see how it might develop, the wines I bought EP were just the good value reds whereas I did buy some Croze Hermitage EP wines for the 2015 vintage which will be longer lived.

Great. I made loads of EP purchases this year (2015, but also the 2013 Barolo offer) and I can’t wait to get my hands on them next year! Except that the drinking window for quite a few doesn’t really open until 2020… :grimacing:

thankfully my appointment calendar is reasonably clear then, so that’s fine - you can invite me to join you any time you like to investigate the quality of your purchases

It’s a deal! :grinning:

Glad the purchases have been worth the investment … and wait @M1tch . Despite many years involved with wine, and many more drinking it, I have only once bought any wine en-primeur and that was sort of by accident (it was a case of Pesquera sold by their importer at the time, via a telesales club. I knew nothing about it, but paid, and really enjoyed the wines, but didn’t know what I had).

For anyone interested in more detailed conversations you might be interested to know that there is actually a dedicated En Primeur Group in this community - and it is looking for members and content.

When you join it, you then will have the opportunity to discuss strategies, purchases, plans, campaigns and so on amongst those who are knowledgable about these things.

These specialist conversations will not show on the list of general conversation topics for those who are not members as it could be confusing and off-putting, but could be very interesting to some of you.

Joining the group is straightforward. Visit the Groups page (you can see the link in the ‘hamburger menu’ link in the navigation above, next to your profile image) and click to Join the group.

I love Mont-Redon - some of the best value-for-money southern Rhône around. The Lirac is simply delicious. In a past life I was their UK brand manager, and you couldn’t hope to work with a nicer bunch of people. My most memorable wine ever was a 1961 C9dP from Mont-Redon served in their cellar accompanied by Mme Abeille’s roast lamb and champ potatoes.
