Cretan wines

We are going on holiday to Crete later in May so will be interested to try the local wines and maybe visit a winery or two. By coincidence, I attended a local wine tasting group here in Epping on Friday when the theme was ‘Island Wines’: one of the wines tasted was Domaine Lyrarakis, Dafni, 2016 (£12.50 from Berry Bros & Rudd) which was described as combining the beguiling bay leaf and fennel aromas characteristic of the varietal with breath-taking freshness and purity of fruit! The aniseed flavour of fennel was apparent but not overwhelming - although this is a white wine I thought it might pair with lamb roasted with herbs.

I Googled Domaine Lyrarakis and discover they do guided tastings for visitors four times a day for a reasonable 8 Euros to taste 6 wines. (Good job my partner doesn’t drink but does drive!)

Anyone got any recommendations of Cretan wines or wineries to visit?

We had a fortnight on Crete last year. Didn’t visit any wineries but I blogged about the experience here:
