100-year old job opportunity?

Anyone else catch this in the Saturday Telegraph?

Yes, I read it but couldn’t understand exactly what the job was…

It is not at all clear, but as it related to ad valorem excise duty, I would guess that it was to determine a fair price for various wines. You wouldn’t want restaurants under-pricing vintage Champagne, and clawing back profits by over-charging on other items.

sorry what is the Sunday Telegraph?

Who mentioned the Sunday Telegraph?

If you want to read more try searching Hansard - eg reports on debates on the 1920 Finance Bill. A quick search threw this up:-

Not read this in any detail but early on Rear Admiral Adair comments on the potential need for a champagne taster…

Interesting to read the defence of high wine prices charged by restaurants. Nothing changed in 100 years…
